Service

Service: ... supplementary activities for the advantage of customers...
The Chambers Twentieth Century Dictionary, 1977

"Service" is when the national rail company does away with the last three trains in the evening that took you straight home obliging you to change and wait in a station on the way as part of their much announced campaign to satisfy traveller's needs better.

"Service" is when your friendly computer vendor tells you he isn't at all surprised that the screen he sold you a year earlier has just gone permentantly black. It happens to that model quite often.

"Service" is when, after a week of hopelessly struggling to re-connect to your Internet service provider, you discover that they have changed their modems without telling you and that those new modems are no longer compatible with yours.
